Why I built Annam.

A note from the founder

It was 2023. I was 23, living in a paying-guest accommodation in Bengaluru, working a nightshift in an operational role.

The PG provided food. But the quality was bad. Really bad — oily, repetitive, served at the wrong temperatures, sometimes from food that had been sitting around for too long. You can't expect a healthy body when this is what you're eating every day. And given my lifestyle — sleep at sunrise, work through the night — it mattered more than ever.

Whenever I tried to take diet seriously — order something nutritious, find healthier options — the costs would shoot up. Eating well in a metro city, on a metro salary, while working irregular hours felt impossible. Homely food was missing from my life entirely. Months of daily outside food from random places eventually made me fall sick.

I wasn't able to find proper food. I started missing home — really missing it. And then I realised: there are millions of people like me. Students. Working professionals. Nightshift workers. People who moved to cities chasing opportunity, and lost their health in the process. We weren't bad at eating — we just didn't have the systems.

So I decided to build the answer I wish I'd had — an organisation that provides homely food in a healthy way, so the well-being of people like us is finally taken care of.

My partner is finishing her food-science programme, watching how diet platforms work everywhere from RX-grade clinical programs to commercial meal kits. We know Indian food, with its incredible regional diversity, deserves the same level of care. Annam means food, sustenance, life — in Tamil and Sanskrit, the same word. It's the most sacred form of life itself. That's what we want to deliver, every single day.

How is this different from a franchise?+

A franchise charges an upfront brand fee (₹15–50 lakh typically) plus ongoing royalty (5–15% of revenue) and binds you to strict operational rules. Our programme has zero brand fee, zero royalty — only a transparent revenue share on each order we send you. You keep your independence, your kitchen name, and can leave anytime with 30 days notice.

What's the revenue share?+

Annam takes 28–35% of each order's value, depending on cuisine complexity and city. The rest goes to you to cover ingredients, packaging, gas, electricity, and your earnings. We disclose the exact percentage during the discovery call. As you scale, the share trends to the lower end of that range — better margins for committed kitchens.

What if I don't have ₹2 lakh to invest?+

We help you apply for Mudra loans (up to ₹10 lakh, low interest) and Stand-Up India loans (specifically for SC/ST/women entrepreneurs, up to ₹1 crore). Most kitchen-partners use a mix of personal savings + Mudra. Our team walks you through the paperwork.

Why does management approval matter?+

One bad kitchen can ruin Annam's reputation for thousands of customers. Our quality team reviews every kitchen — hygiene, equipment, recipe execution, packaging — before activation. No kitchen receives orders until management approval is granted. If something doesn't meet standards, we tell you exactly what to fix and re-audit free of charge.

Can men apply?+

Absolutely yes — our programme is open to everyone. We highlight the women-entrepreneur angle because India's home cooks are predominantly women whose talent is structurally undervalued, and we want to fix that. But the application process and economics are identical regardless of gender.

What cities are you in?+

Currently active: Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad. Launching in 2026: Chennai, Delhi NCR, Kolkata. If you're outside these cities, you can still apply — we'll add you to the waitlist and prioritise expansion based on demand.

How many hours a day do I need to work?+

Starter kitchens (30–60 meals/day): typically 4–5 hours, mostly during lunch and dinner prep windows. Pro kitchens (150+ meals/day): 7–9 hours with one or two helpers. You set your daily capacity in the vendor app — if you can only cook 30 meals on a given day, we won't send you 50.
